Isi artikel
The last decade has seen a significant, but rarely discussed, rise in the number of supply teachers. Data in the area is scarce. Discussions about supply teaching remain marginal to policy debate. This is surprising for a number of reasons. Firstly, although used throughout the system, supply teachers are most commonly employed in those schools which this government is rightly most worried about – namely urban secondary schools. Secondly, considering recent debates about the relationship between the private sector and education, it is frequently overlooked that most supply teacher provision is now carried out by private agencies. Finally, it is possible that practices around supply teaching may provide answers to dilemmas of teacher shortages and the future of the profession.
