The purpose of this paper is to introduce and explore some issues emerging from an action research approach to implementation of performance management in one school. It forms part of a broader action research project undertaken through collaboration between The Earl Grey School and the Centre for Educational Policy and Management at the Open University.The research partners’ aim was to try to develop a strategy that would embed performance management more centrally in the school’s culture so that it would be seen to contribute to addressing core issues with which the school was faced. The research also informs a broader research project on implementation of performance management currently being undertaken by one of the authors.
