The faculty of Modern Foreign Languages has had to face numerous, seemingly insurmountable, problems. In common with many other schools in the country, there was, and continues to be, a lack of suitable, qualified language teachers resulting in a kind of crisis management on a daily basis. Furthermore, despite a previous outstanding reputation for the teaching of MFL, motivation among students is generally low. This is reflected in a less than satisfactory uptake for a second language and A-level entries in MFL, as well as a recent decline in results. Despite these problems, morale in the MFL team is high. All are keen to improve on a difficult situation. It is not surprising that initial discussions focused on many of these problems. It was difficult to see solutions. We soon realised that our aims could relate to the need to increase motivation among students and teachers alike. Bearing in mind the principles of action research, these issues were discussed during a faculty staff meeting without the involvement of the Open University. It was clear that teachers were also concerned about the significant gender divide, with the boys doing much less well and being less easy to motivate than the girls. It was decided to investigate this further. The aim was to find out if motivation among boys and girls could be increased. A further, perhaps less explicit, aim was to re-stimulate an interest in teaching methods, for teachers to become pro-active rather than re-active and to begin to feel more in charge of a difficult situation where there could be both learning and enjoyment.
