When Des took up her headship at the Lord Grey School in May 2000, she found a school, which, despite its Language Technology School Status, was suffering a blow to morale. A disappointing Ofsted inspection placed the school in the ‘serious weaknesses’ category. Her previous experience as a deputy head of an ‘effective learning’ research group, linked to nearby universities, had suggested that an effective way to promote better morale, whilst encouraging staff to review their professional practice, might be through some form of active, reflectionoriented professional development activity. Since she had gained her NPQH through The Open University’s Supported Open Learning (SOL) route, and since the university was only some five miles from the school, she approached the Centre for Educational Policy and Management (which ran the SOL NPQH) to discuss possible ways forward.
