Isi artikelHeadship can be a lonely affair –even from the very start. I well remember driving up on the first day of my contract to the school where I had been appointed headteacher. I knew very few people, no one was there to greet me and I had an empty diary. I thought I knew what the job was –or what it was not. Several headteachers I had worked with had taught me, unwittingly, what I must not do. Even so, there were some basic things to learn before I could do anything. At the school there were over one hundred adults and a thousand young people to get to know, not to mention the governing body, parents, members of the local community and officers and elected members of the LEA. And the DfEE somewhere in the background, too. Scary stuff! Scarier still was the fact that I no longer had someone I could talk to in confidence about my work and how I could best do it. My previous head had been very good at supporting and guiding, challenging and teaching me.
