Isi artikelThere is little doubt that the course of the last two decades has seen a changing role for T jtj headteachers working in maintained schools in the United Kingdom. By the start of the Eighties there was considerable political dissatisfaction with the apparent lack of market accountability in schools (Feintuck, 1994) and concern that heads had far too much direct control over the curriculum and what else went on in schools (Pollard, 1994) .
