The concept of headteacher as leader has developed over the last 20 years in British ~ schools. Recent government developments in headteacher training have used this paradigm to introduce fundamental changes to the way in which schools are run. The national standards for headteachers, currently being modified in the light of work done by Hay/McBer, illustrate the new priorities for headship. The trio of leadership programmes - National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), Headteachers’ Leadership and Management Programme (HEADLAMP), Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH) - introduced in England and Wales since 1995, are designed to influence the way headteachers think about, and deliver, an increasingly nationally determined service.
