In considering the recent leadership literature it isapparent that the views of headteachers still continue to dominate thinking and discussion about leadership (Tomlinson et al, 1999; MacBeath et al, 1999). The international literature contains many accounts of effective leadership emanating directly from headteachers, which rarely reflect the views of others within the school (Day et al, 1999;2000). As Hall and Southworth (1997) noted a few years ago, the idea that powerful and visionary heads enhance the school’s effectiveness is thus a continuing belief in the research and teacher profession generally. Yet beyond this assertion surprisingly little is known. Longitudinal and observational studies of heads increasing the effectiveness of schools they lead are presently lacking.
