Selecting a new teacher is an important task. New teachers have to contribute usefully from the start and make the grade quickly. To some extent, a newly qualified teacher (NQT) is untried, and headteachers and their governors have to look for qualities that suggest the NQT will make the grade. The process of short-listing is seldom easy as it often relies on paper evidence, a significant amount of which is provided by the applicant. In other words, it depends largely on the applicant knowing what is relevant for the selectors to assess. There may be some guidance in the ‘further details’ that are usually available but they often need interpretation. What if an applicant’s conceptions of what is important are not the same as those of the selectors? The NQT could be such a teacher and not necessarily through fault but simply by inexperience or partial experience. At this early stage, the selectors’ ideas about what matters most are likely to be tentative and malleable. Knowing a little about NQTs’ thoughts is worthwhile as it can inform the process of short-listing, selection at interview and subsequent support and assessment of the NQT’s work.
