Isi artikel
The Warao of eastern Venezuela conduct dispute mediation events termed monikata nome anaka in response to intra- and inter-familial conflict. This paper analyzes a particular case in terms of the metapragmatic features that participants use in constructing an account of the conflict, shaping the ongoing interaction, and influencing broader patterns of social relations. Maintaining a dynamic balance between three conflicting metapragmatic modes of organizing discourse is crucial to the success of these events as well as to the ability of leaders to preserve their political power and the integrity of the local community.
