Isi artikel
In Cretan narratives about animal raiding, the inversion of official rules does not necessarily mean that actors lack a sense of normative action. On the contrary, villagers represent excessive involvement with officialdom as an inversion of norms, and their own deeds as exemplifying the social ideal. Borrowing conventional narrative forms from the official repertoire, they subversively criticize official values and excuse themselves for their own personal acts of legality.
