Isi artikelThis description of language ideology in rural Quechua-speaking communities is based on a two-year ethnographic study of language attitudes and use in the communities and their schools. Attention is on attitudes toward oral/written Spanish and Quechua. and toward regional/stylistic variation within Quechua. Language ideology is found to include loyalty to Quechua, the desire to acquire Spanish as a language of prestige and usefulness, and confidence that Quechua will not disappear.
