Isi artikel
The form of talk addressed to young Javanese children by their caregivers is examined in two communities, one rural and the other urban. In neither community is the talk addressed to young children significantly simplified. Children are spoken to in the forms they are expected to use to address their status superiors/elders. In urban areas where social relationships are largely asymmetric, "baby talk" consists of pragmatically complex honorific forms. In the rural community where social relationships are less hierarchical, caregivers do not present children with honorific speech forms as these forms are not an expected part of speech from those of lower status to their social superiors. Javanese baby talk is found to be responsive to basic social variation, emphasizing different linguistic skills according to the status concerns of each community.
