Isi artikel
This article explores the ways Mande peoples use the words jugu, 'bad', and nyi 'good' in the context of an examination of Mande oral traditions that depict blacksmiths. I want to demonstrate that interpretations unqualified by the nature of Mande culture have resulted in the inappropriate application of Judeo-Christian notions of morality to characters and situations in oral tradition that can be better understood by applying Mande concepts of means and power instead.
