Isi artikelProto-Algic (c. 5000 B.C.) had two chromatic color categories: 'red' (associated with blood), and 'yellow = light green' (associated with tanned hides and growing things). Proto-Algonquian (c. 1000 B.C.) continued this system, but the middle Atlantic Algonquians began subdividing 'yellow= light green'. This appears to reflect the expansion of horticulture--not a general increase in cultural complexity as implied by previous studies.
