Isi artikel
This paper investigates how speakers at business meetings of three United Methodist churches in the Midwestern United States negotiate support for their opinions. Specifically, the analysis focuses on accommodating politeness features which optionally co-occur with speech acts of suggestion and disagreement, features which serve to mitigate a speech act's force. Findings indicate certain quantitative and qualitative differences in occurrences of face-threatening acts (FTA's) and politeness features which correlate with the three roles of minister, chair and ordinary group member. In particular, the ministers, who have the greatest status and social investment in the meetings, utilize a unique and effective combination of features of both "powerful" and "accommodating" language styles.
