Isi artikelThe paper argues that for an adequate analysis of the language of religion it is necessary to examine its religious context. The metaphor in the Brahmanas (ritualistic texts of the Hindus) involves two patterns of personification of the ritual-related objects as males or females. One in which the grammatical gender of the noun is interpreted as the natural gender of its referent and another in which the referents are randomly personified as males or females. The analysis shows that the two patterns occur in "speculative" and "non- speculative" ritual discourse respectively. The term mithuna pair implies "sexualization" of the ritual object in the former but not in the latter discourse type.
