Linguistic and social aspects of greeting acts are investigated through work with an informant. Social factors including age grading, affinity, enmity, sex, and social sponsorship are found to determine participants, verbal formula, and participatory order. These factors are investigated. The related greeting exchange at marriage, naming, and adulthood ceremonies is examined, revealing additional determinants including agnatic rank and lineality. Ordering of the determinants is established.
