Abstract
This study is an attempt to explore the sociolinguistic and linguistic differences in the writings of primary boys and girls in English. Previous research focused on the differences in male and female language in oral communication. This could be explained by the fact that one’s language ability is commonly gauged by his or her speaking skills. However, men and women communicate and use language in different ways. Speaking is just one form of communicating. Writing is another means of communication and its importance should not be ignored. That there are differences between male and female language is hardly a matter of dispute. Linguistic differences in male and female language in written communication, however, are less documented.
In analyzing the sociolinguistic and linguistic differences in the compositions of boys and girls, the study focused on the use of verbs, adjectives, adverbs and offensive words. This study was also aimed at determining whether the linguistic differences are well-marked that one can easily identify the gender of the writer. It also probed into how students perceive the writings of boys and girls. Other objectives of this study were the listing of the topic preferences of boys and girls and the identification of the gender group that makes more spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
Keywords: error, gender, linguistic, mistake, sociolinguistic, stereotype
