The investigation of the negotiation of meaning by nonnative speakers (NNSs) has been receiving attention (Porter 1983, Doughty and Pica 1984, Long and Porter 1984, Varonis and Gass 1985b, Ohta 2005). Since nonnative speakers of a language often spend a lot of time talking with other NNSs, it seems reasonable to investigate the nature of these interactions. Krashen (1980) had argued that in order for L2 acquisition to proceed, learners must be exposed to target language (TL) data which they can access. Luciana (2005) found that the interactional mechanisms created through a task, and negotiation of meaning provided a potentially rich forum for students’ language development. |
