The prevalance of diarrhea in the world is still high, especially in the developing countries including Indonesia. Several factors such as personal hygiene, environment, and the organism that causes diarrhea itself, which are interconnected, have been identified as the cause of diarrhea. There are many attempts conducted by the government to reduce morbidity and mortality rate, that were caused by diarrhea. One of the attempts which is being held by the government is the establishment of a program called Pendidikan Medik Pemberantasan Diare (PMPD). In PMPD, one of the ways to treat diarrhea patients is the usage of antimicrobial drugs. The research design used was a descriptive study done by observing patients’s medical record in the Atma Jaya Hospital during year 2005 to 2007. From the research, it was found that 16% of adult diarrhea patients were not given antimicrobial drugs. Among patients whom were given antimicrobial drugs in their treatment, as much as 48.5% had one type of antimicrobial drugs, 29.6% patients were given a combination of two types of antimicrobial drugs, 5.6% patients were given a combination of three types of antimicrobial drugs, while 0.4% patients received a combination of 4 types of antimicrobial drugs. Ciprofloxacin, which was given to 35% of patients, was the most used antimicrobial drugs to treat adult diarrhea case in Atma Jaya Hospital from 2005 until 2007. Quinolone, which is an antimicrobial drugs class, were mostly used to treat adult diarrhea patient in Atma Jaya Hospital during year 2005 to 2007. |
