In recent years, motivation has become a familiar term in second language learning. Research results indicate that motivation is one of determining factors in an individual’s success in developing a second or foreign language (Dornyei, 1990) without sufficient motivation, even individuals with the most remarkable abilities cannot accomplish long-term goals. Research has shown that motivation is essential for second language learning (Dornyei, 1994) because it directly influences how much students make, how often students interact with native speaker, how much input they receive in the language being learned, how well they do on the curriculum related achievement test, how high their general proficiency level becomes, and how long they preserve and maintain second language skills after language study is over (Scarcella and Oxford, 1992). |
