Hand gestures, whether the use of which is accompanied by speech or not, are widely used by people while communicating with other people because it is natural that people use hand gestures in communication. Unfortunately, not many people, even the hand gesturers themselves, seem to pay enough attention to the hand gestures. Herrera (2005) states, “Everyone talks with their hands but few realise how much they are saying”. This is such a shame as hand gestures can actually convey far more meanings than words in communication and are certainly crucial for public speaking, but they go unnoticed most of the time. Hand gestures can deliver messages better than how they are thought and give additional personal information about the users so that conversations can run well (Wood, 2001). |
