Nowadays, many parents like to send their children to an English course so the children can speak English from the early age, from kindergarten or elementary level. Therefore, it is not surprising that teaching English to young learners has been a flourishing enterprise. Unfortunately, it might be the case that the teaching is often put at stake since the prevailing paradigms still put the emphasis on the teaching of grammar as merely rules to learn. In view of the nature of children’s learning, such teaching is not in line with the way the children learn. Children are likely to focus on meaning. Accordingly, the demand for children to master grammar as rules will pose difficulties and boredom for children.Given the problem, finding an effective way to deliver grammar effectively for children should be the ultimate challenge for teachers. It is within this inquiry, focus-on-form may offer a promising alternative approach to teach children. Studies on focus on form, by far, have addressed the cognitive processing that occurs with adults. As for children, such a study is still under-explored. In light of the approach of focus on form that enables learners to shift their attention to form in their own timing agenda while engaged in meaning-oriented discourse, focus on form is worth examining. |
