Acquiring a new language always involves gaining new vocabulary. Vocabulary has to be attained and built, as a learner needs it to understand a new language and to communicate thoughts and ideas to others (Landry, 2003). One of the vocabulary areas for learners to master is multi-word verbs, also known as Phrasal Verbs, since the use of multi-word verbs is inevitable for both native and non-native speakers. In fact, they are used so frequently that some publishers have dictionaries/workbooks focusing on this particular type of item, for example, the Cambridge International Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs (1997) and the Phrasal Verbs Organizer (Flower, 1993 in Schmitt, 2000). |
