As the English language spread out worldwide, the demand of acquiring English as an effective communication tool has become significant. This issue has been a major concern for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), namely those who live in expanding countries (as defined by Kachru, 1983) such as Indonesia and Korea. In essence, Celce Murcia and Goodwin (1991) state that it is important for language learners to be able to produce correct pronunciation although they have mastered the grammar and the vocabulary of English. The present study investigates some problematic sounds faced by Korean learners as described by some scholars (e.g. Rion, 2001; Bauman, 2006). By focusing on the segmental aspects of pronunciation, namely vowels and consonants, this study will largely confirm the results of the previous research on problematic sounds faced by Korean learners of English. |
