Isi artikelDuring the last 15 years, Ukraine has been through great changes, including the Declaration of Independence of 1991 and the Orange revolution of 2004. However, its educational system remains predominantly authoritarian and ethnocentric despite centralized educational reforms. This article considers the importance of ethnic tolerance as a component of national identity in Ukraine and recommends the need for a multicultural educational policy, which will enhance social inclusion. The research is grounded in the case study approach. For the purpose of collecting information regarding cultural expectations in teacher education, the article includes a document analysis of contemporary Ukrainian educational policies and examines existing teacher and student beliefs about civic education. The study suggests practical recommendations for promoting intercultural dialogue for civil society and democratic citizenship.
