Abstract
In the present chapter, we consider theoretical, empirical, and methodological issues related to the study of how Asian Americans cope with stress. We begin by first acquainting readers with some of the cultural complexities associated with being Asian American. Then, we provide a brief overview of Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) stress and coping
model, as well as other coping models, and examine relevant findings comparing Asian
Americans and Caucasian Americans. Following this, we explore potential sources of these coping findings as a function of differences in stressful experiences encountered by Asian Americans compared to Caucasian Americans. Finally, we end by discussing two promising methodological approaches that may help researchers gain greater insights to understanding the coping process among Asian Americans, namely, the use of psychophysiological assessments and experience sampling method.
