This essay reviews three books that explore the feasibility of different avenues out of poverty. These include working one’s way out of poverty through the low-wage labor market, the role of microenterprise programs in assisting individuals into economic prosperity, and the effectiveness of governmental social welfare and employment policies aimed at inequality and poverty reduction. The findings from these books provide strong support for the importance of strategies that address the structural rather than individual dynamics of poverty.
