Isi artikelFor most ESL learners, the task of writing can be a daunting experience as it involves the writer to write a clear, relevant and informative text to enable the reader to interpret the presumed intentions. Since the ability to write in a second language is no doubt even more difficult than learning the other skills, it is not surprising that many students may take years to achieve even a satisfactory success. This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the academic writing needs of TESL students studying at a Malaysian University. These students are enrolled in the TESL programme offered by the University for those who have scored at least band 3 in the Malaysian University English Test [MUET]. As such, the Malaysian society presumes students from these programmes are proficient in English since they will become English teachers upon graduation. This paper looks at how far the perception is true. Data was attained from essays composed by 15 first year TESL students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The analysis reveals that most of the students do not appear to have possessed an impressive awareness of the English language. Findings will be discussed in relation to the pedagogical aspects of the courses offered in the TESL programmes
