Abstract
This paper is a discussion of the absurdity of the life of the Aborigines in postcolonial Australia. The Aborigines as revealed in Mudrooroo's Wild Cat Falling are experiencing predicament in the White-dominated society. They are alienated from the environment and from the society which still retain some values of colonial Australia. Colonialism is about relation of two groups of people in which the one group is attempting to exert power over the other's freedom. Therefore, this paper examines Mudrooroo's novel in light of the philosophy of Existentialism and Absurdity by Jean Paul-Sartre, and Albert Camus since they offer some comprehensive theories of human freedom and relation. This paper also employs postcolonial theories to make a sharper analysis of how colonial system operates. I situate the issue of alienation around the year of publication of the novel, 1965; the period when the Stolen Generation ended. I also put the issue in a wider historical context that is the period of decolonization all over the world. In this study I find that the colonial system is perpetuated by the way the settlers are looking at the Aborigines. The colonial gaze keeps objectifying and alienating the Aborigines so that they are becoming strangers in the White society. This gaze is ultimately dehumanizing them because it reduces them into objects-for-Others. The Aborigines who have been taken away from their society find their life absurd, meaningless. The conclusion of this research also recommends that the current curricula of the English departments in Indonesia start to promote the postcolonial criticism for the students, including the undergraduate students. This criticism is important because it enables students to critically uncover the colonial power relation that operates in a literary work. Moreover, the historical connection with Indonesia's colonized past makes it even more relevant for Indonesian students to study postcolonial theory and postcolonial writings.
