Reading is usually the first of the three Rs in common parlance. Most of the time, reading means simply the ability to see—and to swallow—what is written on paper and if need be, to retrieve and regurgitate it on demand. Too much academic and professional reading fits this pattern. Readers of all kinds have often gotten by with this see-and-swallow approach, which bypasses any critical or analytic function applied to what the eyes take in and what the surface of the page offers.
