The current debate in women’s studies on renaming the discipline gender studies has both literal and figurative meaning for developing a new perspective on feminist social work practice and scholarship. The debate has renewed our awareness that oppression is a more fundamental category than sex for understanding women’s inequality and men’s psychosocial oppression. By becoming gender studies, women’s studies will take a more relevant stance on the study of violence-war, famine, world poverty, and intolerance. It is significant that these conditions persist and are worsening throughout the world, despite the impressive legal and political gains related to status that women achieved during the 20th century.
