In this interview Barbara Stafford explains the extent to which the neurosciences offer important insights for contemporary social and cultural theorists. She explains how recent research on the neuroscientific basis of imitation, perception and gesture directs social and cultural theory towards a deeper and more sophisticated understanding of cultural production. She goes on to discuss how the cognitive neurosciences open up new frameworks for understanding the nature of meaning, interpretation and the cultural significance of conscious awareness.
