Technology and aesthetics have not always been easy interlocutors, especially when ‘the technological’ is associated with artificiality and technique. However, prior to Benjamin’s seminal text, in the 1920s Soviet artists celebrated available technologies because they saw them as ‘more democratic’ – that is, capable of communicating to a wider audience. Today, once again, we need to think through constructivist political and theoretical appropriations of new technology, especially in the form of ‘new media’.
