Isi artikelIn this article we raise some questions of method in connection with the intellectual and practical concerns of the first volume of the New Encyclopaedia Project: Problematizing Global Knowledge. We identify the political and ethical stakes inherent historically in the encyclopaedic tendency and acknowledge both rigorously argued sceptical positions as well as those dedicated to building encyclopaedic knowledge. We also examine some of the critical arguments concerning method in social theory and philosophical thought to the extent that these have played some part in how the editors of the volume have conceived the project. Weaving between critical and sceptical tendencies and more apparently positive approaches to knowledge, the article follows a middle way, examining the role of western knowledge in global contexts while following through with questions concerning the force and urgency of nonwestern traditions of knowledge in similar contexts.
