Isi artikelThis piece examines the cultural, historical and political contexts surrounding the forthcoming opening of the Maison des Civilisations et de l’Unité Réunionnaise (MCUR), museum and cultural centre, on Reunion Island in 2010. The MCUR was conceived around the visualization of memories and the people of the island – especially around the island’s history of resistance, repression and the colonial ‘denial of the vernacular’. It aims to offer a space of encounter and interpretation – to present the lives and experiences of marginalized people: slaves, indentured workers and the multi-layered complex of the India-Oceanic world. The MCUR locates the island within the Indian Ocean’s routes, contacts and conflicts and strives to represent the enduring connection between Africa, Asia and Islam, as well as to the many and varied responses to European imperialism.
