Time limits for the receipt of welfare were imposed on San Antonio’s Mexican American mother-led families earlier than for welfare participants in other states. This article examines the effects of this social experiment on an already vulnerable population and addresses the effects of family support, both given and received, on the women’s reliance on welfare and on work.
