Current events—in Kosovo and Littleton, Colorado, for example— remind us that feminist principles, which valorize peaceful and nonviolent solutions to social problems, remain elusive goals for the majority of women who espouse them. Feminist goals for achieving equity in marketplaces or in occupations formerly restricted to men have proved easier to attain, although much remains to be done to consolidate and extend these gains. This being the case, feminist social workers may consider reinvolving ourselves in the historic struggle for world peace, once championed by Jane Addams (who received several international peace awards for her efforts) and her cohorts at the Charity Organization Society. Making a concerted effort to advance the cause of gun control in the United States would be a good place to begin this renewal of our purpose.
