There are too many easy reasons to want to forget horrors, especially the horrors that constitute genocide. Living through a situation develops a different level of awareness and response than being distant and not personally implicated in it. This realization highlights the need to recognize that it is not because of the lack of compassion that we tend to “forget” so quickly, but rather it is the lack of right understanding about how to make a difference that is complicit in our cognitive failures. The intent of this reflection is to provide a context for remembering Rwanda and for providing a healing perspective on similar disasters. In this regard, a brief overview and historical context of the conflicts that led to the killing inRwanda is presented, followed by a discussion of the survival issues experienced by the women of Rwanda during the 100 days of terror and death and the implications of a healing perspective.
