Isi artikelIn this piece Simmel argues that Goethe’s youth is guided entirely by the ideal of developing his existence to its utmost height, power and perfection. For the youthful Goethe ‘feeling is everything’. However, in Goethe’s great turn from youth to ‘old age’, Simmel observes that Goethe’s ideal from his youth has been transformed in objective ideals of action and knowledge. However, Simmel concludes that the transformation of Goethe’s attitudes between youth and maturity is nevertheless borne by a principle of youth. As such, Simmel thinks that there is always something of ‘the eternal youth’ in Goethe.
