Isi artikelAfter the First World War, Simmel argues that a new socio-political order needs to appear that will express the will of the German people more authentically. In his view, the war needs to cast off the husk of the old order, and this will require all Germans to make a decision about the absolute grounds on which they stand. He goes on to argue that the war will not create a new religion, but will confront what for the individual really is his religion. In this way, the war should allow Germany to accomplish its great hope: to ‘become what it is’, something that will require Germany to engage in struggle, hardship and danger.
