Elizabeth Cady Stanton constantly worked to promote women’s suffrage. In 1893, when she was 78 years old and still working toward her heartfelt goal, she realized that she would not live to vote. She wrote in her diary, “I never forget that we are sowing winter wheat the coming spring will see sprout and which other hands than ours will reap and enjoy” (Stanton, 1922, p. 302). In 1920, 18 years after her death, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified exactly as she had drafted it, finally granting women the right to vote.
