Letter to the Editor: Assault Histories Among Psychiatric Inpatients With Borderline Personality: A Pilot

We were interested in exploring whether patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) report a higher prevalence of assaultive behavior in their histories when compared with other types of psychiatric patients. This possibility is suggested by one of the diagnostic criteria for BPD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), which is, “inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger” and is exemplified by displays of temper, constant anger, or recurrent physical fights. The empirical examination of the relationship between assaultive behavior and BPD has been previously examined among psychiatric inpatients (Goodman, Hull, Clarkin, & Yeomans, 1999; Grosz, Lipschitz, Eldar, et al., 1994; Soliman & Reza, 2001), batterers (Bartel & Simon, 1996; Coleman, 1994; Dutton & Starzomski, 1993; Else, Wonderlich, Beatty, Christie, & Staton, 1993; Goodman & New, 2000; Murphy, 1994; Prodgers, 1984; Tweed & Dutton, 1998), and murderers (Marleau, Poulin, Webanck, Roy, & Laporte, 1999; Raine, 1993), and in each of the previous studies, there was a positive correlation between these two variables. However, these prior studies have been limited by the lack of control groups, by various approaches to the diagnosis of BPD, small sample sizes, the assault variables selected for study, and the use of unique populations (e.g., murderers). Among a sample of community-hospital psychiatric inpatients, we undertook a pilot study to further examine the relationship, if any, between a diagnosis of BPD and selfreported histories of assaultive behavior.
