Abstract
This study is concerned with evaluation of EAP syllabus and EAP course book designed for undergraduate students at UNJ Jakarta. As writing an EAP course book is not merely collecting materials and compiling them into a book, the course book understudy is assumed to have met necessary requirements.
The objective of this study is to assess whether or not the EAP syllabus adopted by the course book has been designed to meet the standard procedures in EAP syllabus designing, and to assess whether or not the content of the course book meets the objectives formulated in the syllabus.
This study is conducted through descriptive analytical interpretative by making use of document study as it investigates two kinds of documents; the EAP syllabus and the course book, which are also the sources of the data. The instruments of this study are document analysis and interview. The data found in the syllabus are analyzed using the main components of EAP syllabus design derived from Jordan (1997) and the data found in the course book are analyzed using the criteria of material evaluation derived from Cunningsworth (1984).
The findings of this study showed that the syllabus adopted by the course book understudy is not designed through the standard procedures EAP syllabus designing and the content of the course book does not meet the objectives formulated in the syllabus.
Finally, the writer proposed some suggestions on how the EAP syllabus should be designed and how learning materials should be selected in order to meet the course objectives. First, it is suggested for course book writers as well as curriculum developers to conduct needs analysis. It is considered as a starting point for devising syllabus and course design. Second is to determine the course objectives based on the result of needs analysis. The course objectives absolutely should be clearly stated and in line with the goal of the course. Third is to select the materials related to the course objectives. Fourth is to select the tasks suitable both for material and objectives achieved by the learners. The last one is to determine the method of assessment which should also relate to the course objective.
