Abstract
This study aimed at analyzing the vocabulary in Explore 1 course books used at LBPP LIA for the Intermediate 1 of the English for Adults program. The study was conducted to answer the question on the suitability of the vocabulary in Explore 1 for the students of the respective level. To answer this question, the issues of selection and presentation were addressed.
Careful selection of the vocabulary is needed to make vocabulary learning effective. In this study, analysis on the aspect of selection was done to all the words and the target words in the course books with respect to the students’ vocabulary knowledge and word frequency lists. By doing this, the level of difficulty of the vocabulary was assessed.
To evaluate the presentation of the words in the course books, analyses were conducted on the target words by focusing on the typicality of their meanings and word combinations. The repetition of these meanings and word combinations were also analyzed to find out whether spacing repetition was implemented.
The procedure employed several instruments. To measure the vocabulary knowledge level of the Intermediate 1 students the Vocabulary Levels Test was used. To find out the frequency levels of the words, the RANGE program and its frequency lists, namely the General Service List, The Academic Word List, and the British National Corpus Lists, was used in this study. The RANGE program was also used to study the number and spacing of repetition. Applying concordancer gave information on the occurrences of the target words in the course books; therefore, the typicality of meanings and word combinations could be further analyzed using Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Collocations Dictionary, and Corpus of Contemporary American English.
The study suggested positive result in terms of the level of difficulty of all the words in the course books. It was found that the words were not too difficult with respect to the students’ vocabulary knowledge and word frequency lists. The target words were found to be quite difficult. Through analysis on the typicality of meanings and word combinations of these target words, it was found that most of the target words occurred in their typical meaning and word combinations. Analysis on the repetition of the target words suggested that these words were repeated several times but without implementing the principle of spaced repetition.
The study was expected to give insight on the use of certain principles in vocabulary selection and presentation. Implementing these principles may be useful in two aspects of syllabus development. Firstly, it can provide guidance to develop the vocabulary part of a syllabus. Secondly, it can be used to evaluate the suitability of the vocabulary with the targeted learners.
