The present article describes the events of April 16, 2007, from the author’s perspective. Initial steps, including interaction with graduate students, community partners, and university administrations are detailed. Additionally, the development of a working model to guide mental health efforts in both the university and local community is described. The steps in the designing and administrationmof a needs assessment followed by lessons learned are also presented.
