Isi artikelIrecently had the opportunity to read the Mental Health Advisory Team (MHAT) IV Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 final report. As a new investigator in the field of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a former National Guardsman, I was both pleasantly surprised and shockingly dismayed by the findings of the MHAT IV report. The Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) conflicts have given a new urgency to the development of more comprehensive evaluations of deployed troops. The mere fact that a comprehensive, scientific study could be carried out during a time of conflict is just amazing. However, the incidence of PTSD (as measured by acute stress in the MHAT IV), depression and anxiety, and the reported family issues, were quite disheartening.
