Isi artikelThis paper examines the process of modernization in six Indian languages. The languages studied are taken from both the Indo-Aryan and the Dravidian families of languages and it is shown that there is a striking similarity across languages in the mechanisms and resources used for modernization. Study of modernization of some other languages shows that there are basic differences in the processes employed for modernization. On these grounds it is claimed that the similarities found among the Indian languages provide clear evidence for the existence of an Indian sociolinguistic area.
