Isi artikelWithin a multidisciplinary anthropological study, the extent of linguistic differentiation in eight villages on the island of Korcula, Yugoslavia, has been examined. The linguistic analysis based upon shared cognates reveals a striking variability within this geographically small area. In quantifying the degree of linguistic similarity, we find that the linguistic divergence of the villages corresponds significantly with geo- graphic distances and certain demographic factors. However, linguistic divergence is not significantly related to the pat- tern of genetic microdifferentiation found on the island, as measured by migrational kinship. Existing linguistic differences are explained by population migrations throughout history, different linguistic strata, demographic, and geographic factors.
